Credit card firms reminded of payment laws

A consumer group has reminded credit cards of their legal obligation to consumers regarding payments made on cards.

Martyn Saville, senior researcher for consumer group Which?, criticised credit card providers for trying to redirect insurance payouts to other organisations.

He reiterated section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act, which gives consumers a right to pursue either the retailer or the card provider if they make a purchase worth £100 to £30,000 but do not get the goods or service for which they paid.

Mr Saville was responding to data from the Financial Ombudsman Service which showed that complaints of this kind went up by 50 per cent in the last year.

He said that credit card firms who do not accept this liability are "absolutely wrong" to refuse to pay out and to try to send consumers elsewhere.

According to Mr Saville, consumers' legal rights are "black and white" and they have the choice.
