A type of payment con known as "facility takeover fraud" is increasing quickly.

This is according to Neil Munroe of credit record agency Equifax.

He told the Daily Mail that it is "is growing rapidly".

The paper reported the case of Greg Fiber, who used a Citi credit card to buy a computer online and was then subject to fraud when two more unauthorised transactions were made on it.

Although the card was stopped and another sent, the new one never arrived - and Mr Fiber instead had a letter from Citi to thank him for telling it that he had changed his address.

Fraud expert Cifas said facility takeover fraud like this is "particularly traumatic for the victim".

Stephen Markwell of J P Morgan recently gave advice on how businesses can guard against cheque fraud.

Buying cheques only from trusted and known vendors was one suggestion, as well as using cheque stock that carries a watermark.
