Payment fraud warning issued over online scams

A warning about online scams has been given to internet users.

Get Safe Online manager Tony Neate said that internet scams targeting people making online transactions are increasing.

He said that existing laws are sufficient for legitimate traders and that there is no need for new legislation, but warned people to watch out for those who are not adhering to the law as it is.

The advice he gave included checking out the address of a company and its landline number.

Recently, Paul Miloseski-Reid of Trading Standards explained that it can be very difficult to track down people trading fraudulently on the internet.

He said that anyone in the world can buy a UK website, which could lead people to think that they are purchasing from a UK-based company.

"It doesn't matter how flash a website appears to be, it could just be one person behind it all on the other side of the world," he warned.
