People are making better use of the internet as they seek good deals in the recession.
This is according to Mark Pearson, managing director of MyVoucherCodes.
Research by the discount code website showed that while the average spend with it was £74 in 2007, this rose to £113 last year.
Mr Pearson said that payment trends have changed in that consumers have become more "savvy" and are researching prices more, using comparison sites and increasingly turning to online discounts.
He added that firms are slashing prices more where they can as they attempt to stay afloat and compete with each other.
MyVoucherCodes processed 2.5 million internet transactions last year.
In that time, more than £281 million worth of sales were registered, £55 million of which came during December.
According to Mr Pearson, consumers are making "unprecedented" savings on their everyday purchases such as supermarket shopping by going on to the internet.
