People going away on summer breaks have been advised to take a prepaid card to pay their way.
According to moneysupermarket.com, holidaymakers could save as much as £20 for every $500 or 500 euros they buy if they take it with them on a prepaid card.
Head of travel money at the price comparison site Peter Harrison warned people off deals that impose charges for use and application, but said that prepaid cards "consistently offer great foreign exchange rates".
Another advantage, he said, is that they can help people to keep to a budget.
The comparison site said that the prepaid card industry is enjoying growth as more people turn to it as a payment method.
Sainsbury's Finance Travel Money recently reported that British holidaymakers face higher costs as the pound has deteriorated in value against other currencies.
Out of the 11 currencies studied, the only one that the pound has strengthened against in the last year is the Turkish lira.
