Toronto card parking meters 'not beneficial'

Credit card parking meters brought into Toronto have not been advantageous, according to the city auditor.

Auditor general Jeff Griffiths produced a report on the new payment system, which cost $10 million (£5.32 million).

He discovered that declined and uncollected card transactions almost doubled last year, according to the Toronto Star.

The new readers were found to be of "no significant benefit".

Prior to the new card reading payment system, the 2,600 meters worked on a pay and display basis.

The newspaper also reported that the readers had cost $3,840 (£2,043) each, citing Fixer articles from last year, but had not been able to find any readers that came to even half of the price.

Elsewhere, in New Zealand, the Otago Daily Times repots that Dunedin city council is bringing in 150 new machines with the capacity for credit card or text message payments.

They will start working next month.
