A and L customers to provide passwords for online payments

Alliance & Leicester customers who pay their bills online on the BillPay website will now be asked to provide passwords to authenticate their transactions and help prevent fraud, it has been revealed.

The bank will be using the MasterCard Secure Code and Verified by Visa online authentication services to help ensure that people making bill payments online have better protection, finextra.com has reported.

Graham Long, head of payment services at Alliance & Leicester Commercial Bank, told the news provider that a growing number of people are choosing to pay their bills online as the internet becomes increasingly prevalent.

"3D Secure will provide businesses and payers with enhanced security and I am confident that this will lead to further growth in the number of organisations choosing our BillPay service," he commented.

Meanwhile, a survey conducted by TickBox has found that three-quarters of people are concerned they will be more exposed to fraud as a result of the new contactless payment cards.
