ATMs 'most popular with Brits abroad'

British holidaymakers favour ATMs for accessing their cash overseas, new research has found.

Almost one in three Britons said they rely on the service when they run out of their initial cash supply, according to the survey by Level Four Software.

Interestingly, it suggested ATMs are more popular among younger age groups, with 39 per cent of 18 to 24-year-olds but only 28 per cent of 55 to 64-year-olds stating it as their first choice.

The company's chief executive officer Ian Kerr said the study "clearly shows" ATMs are customers' "single biggest touch-point with their banks" when they are away on holiday.

He added: "As a result, banks must continue to invest in services and innovate at the ATM, including in crucial areas such as displaying rates and charges transparently."

Separate findings released last week by the UK payments association Apacs suggested Britons in general are more likely to pay by their debit rather than their credit cards.

Its report entitled The Way We Pay 2008: UK Plastic Cards found spending on debit cards made up 62 per cent of all plastic card use last year.
