The increasing use of Wi-Fi networks raises questions about the security of information held by companies, one industry expert has suggested.
David Emm, senior technology consultant at Kaspersky Lab, said it will become more difficult for businesses to keep track of all access points when different offices set up their own ad-hoc Wi-Fi networks, techradar.com reports.
The website adds that this becomes a major issue for consumers because their personal information and payment details may be held on company computer systems.
Mr Emm told the news provider: "If a company has a Wi-Fi network then they need to stop it broadcasting to people they don't want to access it, they have to securely encrypt it or make it invisible."
In related news, it has just been reported that the US authorities have charged members of a criminal gang thought to be responsible for the theft of more than 40 million credit and debit card numbers.
Finextra.com said the group is accused of hacking into the wireless computer networks of various retailers to obtain account numbers and passwords, before withdrawing tens of thousands of dollars at a time from ATMs.
